Given these persistent breaches of the Editors’ Code of Practice, the question is whether IPSO will now undertake a standards investigation into ‘The Mail on Sunday’. It chose instead to publish error-filled articles on 12 and 19 February that were filled with his characteristic hubris.Īltogether, five of Mr Rose’s articles have been shown to be false over the past year, with IPSO adjudications published on 6 August, 17 September and 24 September 2017. When I pointed out to the newspaper that Mr Rose’s article of 5 February was wrong, it was not interested in correcting it. This episode exposes the disregard for accuracy that is frequently shown by ‘The Mail on Sunday’ and Mr Rose when covering climate change and other issues. It did not rule on whether the content was inaccurate, but instead assessed only if they had accurately reported the false allegations made by Dr John Bates. It is important to note that IPSO applied the very weakest of veracity tests to the articles by Mr Rose. ![]() ![]() Corrections to these articles have been published online.” “In September, 2017, the Independent Press Standards Organisation upheld a complaint against a February 5 article ‘Exposed: How world leaders were duped over global warming.’ Two subsequent articles on February 12 and February 19 contained claims regarding an influential study about global warming, which have been found to be in breach of the Editors’ Code: namely the claim that the study was known- irrefutably and as fact – to be critically flawed, based on misleading unverified data, and had led world leaders to be duped by its findings. Its correction, published 14 months later, states: ‘The Mail on Sunday’ has finally accepted today that those articles were also inaccurate and misleading. On 17 September 2017, the newspaper published a 647-word “adverse adjudication” by IPSO.īut the newspaper did not correct the articles published on 12 and 19 February, so I submitted a second complaint to IPSO. IPSO launched an investigation into the 5 February 2017 article as a result of my complaint, and eventually ruled that it had breached the Editors’ Code of Practice. On 19 February, it published yet another article by Mr Rose which contained many of the same falsehoods, under the headline: ‘US Congress probe into climate data that duped leaders’. However, the newspaper still refused to publish any correspondence to correct Mr Rose’s mistakes. I had also submitted a complaint on 7 February to the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), which has been set up and funded by a few British newspapers, including ‘The Mail on Sunday’, to enforce compliance with the Editors’ Code of Practice. The article reproduced many of the false claims that were published on 5 February, representing a breach of Clause 1ii) of the Editors’ Code of Practice, which states: “A significant inaccuracy, misleading statement or distortion must be corrected, promptly and with due prominence, and - where appropriate - an apology published”. Here is our reporter’s uncompromising response…’. A sub-heading stated: ‘His revelation that world leaders were duped over vital data sparked fury from the climate change lobby. Instead it featured another article by Mr Rose under the headline ‘How can we trust global warming scientists if they keep twisting the truth?’. I wrote to the newspaper on 6 February 2017 to point out the serious errors in Mr Rose’s article, but it refused to publish it in its next edition on 12 February. The online version of Mr Rose’s fake news report fooled many people around the world, including Lamar Smith, the Republican Chair of the House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space and Technology in the United States. The newspaper wrongly stated that the study was based on “faulty data” and had “duped world leaders”. They repeated false claims, originally published by ‘The Mail on Sunday’ on 5 February 2017, about a study by American scientists showing that the so-called ‘hiatus’ in global warming never occurred. The statement, published on page 2 of today’s print edition, concedes that news stories by its reporter David Rose, published on 12 and 19 February 2017, were inaccurate and misleading, in breach of the Editors’ Code of Practice. It is the latest humiliation for the newspaper which has been misleading its readers for many years about the causes and potential consequences of climate change. ‘The Mail on Sunday’ newspaper has been forced to publish a statement today admitting that two more articles it published last year about climate change were fake news. ![]() This did get the old hamster wheel in my brain turning, though, as I started to wonder the other day about the history and evolution of extended range and multi-course basses. I’ve actually recorded with a proper five-string in the past, not just the down-tuned four that I currently have for those extra low notes and for a while at my music store job, we had a Hamer twelve-string that I enjoyed experimenting with, so they aren’t unfamiliar to me. But there are plenty of other options, and just because I don’t use them doesn’t mean I dislike them. Neal’s Wonderful World Of Bass!Īs a general rule, I play “standard” basses, to the point that I sometimes (okay, frequently) refer to myself as a “four-string slinger” when discussing my musical endeavors. Music & Arts is the premier private music lesson facility and we’re committed to exceptional music education.Hello, hello, hello! Welcome back to Christopher A. Now that you know the differences between the cello and the bass, we hope you’re ready to take the next step and enroll in lessons. Turn the bass slightly to the right and tilt it back so that it rests against the left side of your hip.Adjust the endpin so the nut of the fingerboard is the same level as your eyebrows (note: different bass players have different opinions about where the nut of the fingerboard should rest, so your teacher’s preferred level may vary.).Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. If you prefer to sit, speak with your music instructor for tips and advice. Keep the cello angled to the right so that the bow can reach all the stringsĪlthough the bass can be played in a sitting or standing position, standing is the most common so it’s the one we’ll cover here.Use your knees to keep the cello steady.Adjust the end pin so that the body of the cello rests against your chest, balancing its lower half between your knees.Regardless of your preference, make sure you’re sitting straight Avoid slouching some cellists prefer to sit at the edge of the chair, while others prefer to sit back for more support. The neck of the cello should be to the left of the head, with the C-string tuning peg adjacent to the ear. Here’s a little more information on how to hold a cello and a double bass: How to Hold a Cello: The cello is played sitting down while the bass is played standing up. Difference #4: Playing Position The Bass Is Played Standing Up But the bass is found in almost every form of Western music making it one of the most versatile instruments available. Cellos are very popular in orchestras with between eight and twelve cellos found in large symphony orchestras. Due to its extra octave range, the double bass is capable of producing a deeper sound that the cello is just not capable of producing. It has a deeper and richer tone than both the violin and the viola. The cello is known as an instrument with a tenor voice. Difference #3: Sound – The Double Bass Is Deeper The bass, on the other hand, can be played standing up or while sitting on a tall stool. (Fun fact: the name cello is short for “violoncello”, which means “small double bass” in Italian.) While both the cello and double bass rest on the floor (supported by a metal end pin), the cello is the only instrument in the string family that must be played sitting down. The double bass measures in at about 6 feet long and is the largest instrument in the string family, while the cello is slightly smaller in nature. Difference #2: Size – The Double Bass Is LargerĪlthough the cello and double bass are the largest instruments in the string family, there is a substantial difference in their size. Cellos max out at about five octaves while the double bass maxes out around four. ![]() The result of this standard tuning practice is a much wider range for the cello. Although it is possible to tune a cello in fourths and a double bass in fifths, it is almost never done. Basses are turned in 4ths (E, A, D, and G), with the low E being lower than the cello C. A cello is typically tuned in 5ths from low to high (C, G, D, and A). One of the main differences between the cello and the double bass is its tuning. Head into one of our stores or check out our cello buying guide. If you’ve decided to purchase a cello or a bass and aren’t sure what your next steps should be, we’ve got you covered. From size and tuning to the sound produced and how they’re played, we’ll go through the main differences between the two. When it comes to the cello and the bass, they may look similar but are actually very different. The four main instruments in the string family are the violin, viola, cello, and the double bass. |
